The California’s Office of Administrative Law (OAL) has recently released that as of June 2011 agents may be required to take additional training courses, due to the issue of underinsurance in the state.
The Standards and Training for Estimating Replacement Value on California Home Insurance:
- Require all California resident fire and casualty broker-agents and personal lines broker-agents, to complete a three hour training course on homeowners’ insurance valuation prior to estimating an alternate value of structures in connection with, or explaining the various levels of coverage under, a homeowners’ insurance policy.
- Insurance agents and brokers who provide an estimate to document who created the estimate and the sources or methods used to create the replacement cost estimate.
- Require that all substitute cost estimates communicated to applicants be comprehensive, based upon explicitly enumerated standards made clear in the regulations.
When shopping for California Home Insurance, consumers are faced with many difficult decisions and a lot of information. Having stricter regulations and additional training for agents should help along the process and prevent people from becoming underinsured.
With the onset of cooler temperature there’s no denying that winter is upon us.
This cold, snowy season can cause headaches for Pennsylvania homeowners if the necessary precautions are tossed aside. Make winterizing your home a top priority before it’s too late—and prepare yourself for what the season may bring. Follow these easy weatherization tips to keep you, your family and your home safe this season:
1. Start with the basics; review and evaluate your home heating system. Give your home heating system a good thorough test run to ensure that it is operating properly. Keep up with seasonal maintenance and have your furnace serviced by a technician if needed. Remember to replace air filters and to keep up-to-date on your propane storage. It’s also important to clear any obstacle away from heating events to allow air to flow freely.
2. Plumbing is especially susceptible to cold weather and freezing. Burst pipes from freezing can cause some of the most expensive repairs in the home and inevitably will affect your Pennsylvania homeowners insurance. Begin with insulating exposed piping. If you have any exposed water or drain piping at all in exposed, non-insulated spaces such as in a crawlspace, attic, outside walls, etc., make sure to properly protect them with foam insulation (at a minimum). Preferably, you should wrap them with electrical heating tape first, and then insulate them for extra protection.
3. Cold air from air leaks around doors and windows is as significant a contributor to your heating bill in addition to poor insulation in the walls and ceiling. An easy way to reduce you heating bill this winter is to reduce these drafts with simple weather-stripping. For windows, try this simple test: on a day when it’s windy outside, close your windows and feel for air leaks. Typically air leaks will be at the edges where the window is hinged. Try using rope caulk to seal drafty windows. Press the rope caulk into all the joints where air is leaking. Another problem spot are doors. The easiest fix here is to check for weather-stripping on the side and bottoms of the doors. Install weather-stripping materials where needed.
Try these easy, do-it-yourself tips before the snow starts! And while you’re at it, go that extra step to protect your home from unexpected wintery damage. Keep in mind that when looking for the best Pennsylvania insurance , that not only fits your needs but also fits your budget, you need to be conscious of quality. Never sacrifice the comprehensive coverage you deserve because of price—especially when it could mean leaving you out in the cold!
According to police a couple was killed early Monday in Hilltown Township, Bucks County, when firefighters were called to the scene around 8:00 a.m.
A witness nearby said another man who was in the house was unable to save the man and woman inside before the fire got out of control.
The couple was Katherine Miller and James Betancourt, both retirement citizens. The man who escaped was Miller’s son Ed. He claimed to have escaped from the house when the blaze became so intense that he “got cooked out by the fire” and was unable to rescue the couple.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but the blaze started in the area of the kitchen, said Christopher Engelhart, the Hilltown police chief. No foul play is suspected. Engelhart said he did not know whether the house had working smoke detectors.
Both Miller and Betancourt had lived in the Pennsylvania Home for over 20 years.
Be sure to call for a Pennsylvania Fire Insurance quote in the case that this could happen to your home. Being able to protect your family and belongings in this situation is important. Being able to determine an affordable Pennsylvania Insurance Cost could end up saving your live.

Are you paying too much for
homeowners’ insurance in Alhambra CA? Did you know that the difference in premium costs across different insurance carriers, for the same property, can vary by hundreds of dollars a year?
Naturally, it’s important not to compromise your level of cover to get a discount on your premium. To make sure your home and the possessions you keep in it are adequately insured, you should:
• Know what it would cost you now to build a home that is the same size and quality as yours.
• Make an accurate assessment of the value of your possessions. The best way to do this is to prepare an inventory. When you guess the value you can end up with insufficient cover. Items like books, games and clothing might seem like low value items but when you add up what it would cost to re-buy them all, it’s usually a significant sum of money.
• Be aware of what your policy covers and does not cover. Always check exclusions and take out additional coverage if your home is at risk from the excluded events.
• Check with us in regard to expensive items of jewellery, valuable collections and any expensive equipment you keep at home – these items may not have sufficient coverage under a standard policy and that’s not something you want to find out when you make a claim!

Many Florida residents are receiving homeowners’ non-renewals this year. It seems like one crisis on top of another for some Florida homeowners who have weathered Katrina and the global financial crisis. But a non-renewal isn’t the end of the world and there are things you can do about it.
- Call Gulf Coast Insurance today – the chances are we can assist you obtain a new policy with another insurance carrier.
- Speak to your insurer and offer to increase your deductible – many non-renewals are due to the homeowner having lodged several small claims on their policy, making them less profitable clients for the insurer.
If you haven’t received a non-renewal yet you may be able to avoid receiving one in future by:
- increasing the amount of your deductible – as this reassures insurers that they won’t have to pay a lot of small claims;
- don’t make small claims on your homeowner’s policy – if the cost of a repair is slightly above your deductible, you can pay it from your own funds. This can help keep your premiums down in the future.
If you have a high level of liability coverage on your homeowner policy you might now find it more viable to reduce this and take out an umbrella policy for the liability coverage you need.
We’re experts when it comes to Florida home insurance so for more information about homeowners’ insurance or for assistance with Florida homeowners’ non-renewals, call Gulf Coast Insurance today.
